About Our Parish

Humble Beginnings

We began in March of 1874 as a small mission church in Kimmswick where Holy Mass was celebrated in the homes of various parishoners. Building of the original St. Joseph in Kimmswick began in 1876, and was blessed by Vicar General Henry Muehlsaipen in May of 1877. On October 22, 1876, Elizabeth Schwarz was the first recorded Baptism. Between 1877 - 1993 Our Lord blessed St. Joseph in Kimmswick with continued growth from a small wooden church to a new brick church with a school, convent, and rectory.

Growing Through Change

Over the years, under Our Lord's guidance and grace, and with the help of many great Holy Shepherds, we have survived fire (1958 & 1979) and flood (1993). In December 1992 we began looking for land on which to build a new home. The 2.7 acres in Kimmswick was just too small for our rapidly growing faith community.  In January of 1993 we purchased the existing campus land and so continued the growth of St. Joseph Parish with our church, school, food pantry and meeting areas. We are an open, faith-filled community of people sharing our love for Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Church. Through the Sacraments, a variety of ministries, and prayer, we come together to serve Our Lord, our community and each other. We pray for the continued growth of our parish.  We ask this in order to serve Him and live His Gospel ever greater as we share His love and the Holy Sacraments of the Church with all who are called.

Looking to the Future

Each year we are blessed to continue our mission of sharing our faith and serving others. We continue to grow and change physically with the addition of the new statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, as well as the Shrine to the Sacred Heart in the sanctuary. The Holy Tabernacle on the Altar of Our Lord draws us closer to His Most Sacred Heart during Holy Mass. We pray for the many sons of our parish as some continue their spiritual journey in the seminary and others begin their journey. We are blessed to support them in their calling. We look forward with confident faith. "For I know well the plans I have in mind for you - plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope."  Jeremiah 29:11
